Interesting Facts The P-47, also known as the ÒJugÓ, was a large, high-performance fighter/bomber during World War II. It played an important role in assisting the Allies in Europe during the war and was considered the greatest heavy single-engine fighter constructed during that time. The P-47Õs superior qualities in combat, speed and heavy fire power made it a fine escort and ground attack bomber. The sturdy airframe and tough radial engine could absorb damage and still return home, and it was the first piston-powered fighter to exceed 500 mph. After the war it continued to serve for many additional years with the air forces of over 15 nations around the world. In the history of aviation, Americans built more P-47s than any other American fighter airplane. The Jug flew more than half a million missions and dropped more than 132 thousand tons of bombs. Top Speed: 433 mph. Number Built: 15,686.
